Out of this (edit: not English but German) car? I’m still searching for what it is (edit: 1958ish Mercedes). But I have silly ideas of a 6-71 on a jag (now old merc v12) every time I cycle past this thing on my rides.

Now we know what it is...so how would you build it?

Isn’t that a “Ponton” Mercedes?

I want to put a WST KKM504d engine in it. What that is is an industrial four-rotor multifuel W ankel engine which weighs 266 lbs, makes 402 hp, and revs to 8,000 rpm. It can run on gas, diesel, kerosene, or “gasses”, and it’s a bit smaller than an LS engine.

Kinja'd!!!

Since discovering this engine exists, I’ve been wanting to swap one into pretty much anything if for no other reason than to be the only person at the car show with a diesel rotary. The company says it should work in automotive applications, so why not? https://www.wankelsupertec.de/pdfs/datasheets/KKM500_Datasheet.pdf

As for how I’d build it. I’ve actually had this idea floating in my head before: 60's mild custom style. Lowered on supreme wheels, white paint with ornate pink flake top and something like Olds Rocket V8 under the hood.

The hood doesn’t seem to be from M-B Ponton series. It’s too long and the structure of the grille area is different.

Kinja'd!!!

I have no idea what car would have that kind of a hood but I’m thinking about some obscure British brand . So maybe it’s a bonnet and not a hood?

Those are expensive to restore and then they are worth less than you spent. They are old enough that you need to go to the Classics Center for parts $$$. In Honolulu I knew a guy with one in the garage that was his father’s. He was always trying to sell it, his dad worked for Pan Am and flew it in. But I looked into it a few times and it was going to be expensive. Better off with something a bit later with more parts available from multiple sources. Unless you just put all kinds of other stuff onto in custom. I have actually always wanted to build something from an older London taxi.

I love Rocket V8s but I feel like this needs more cubes. Nailhead maybe? With 3x2s?

You know, I was about to say LS swap, like LS swap where you try to drop it onto a modernish vette chassis, but I like your idea better..

Fun fact, that Ponton was the first car to ever feature impact absorbing crumple zones. Lot of radically modern ideas hidden behind that conservative sheet metal, especially for 1953.

The MGB also featured them, about a decade later, but still quite early to be thinking that much about safety.

I like this engine. I see zero videos of it running on a dyno or in any testing vehicle. Today, if they want anything, they need video. So far, it may be real but its also a vaporware engine until they have running test examples for everyone to notice. I see a video of a 25hp diesel outboard motor from them but thats all. Now with this car i do see some diesel action a definite possibility

Think there’s enough room for a Mercedes aircraft engine? I think 1500hp from 2179ci should be fun. Just need to turn the full trunk into a fuel tank if you actually want to go more than a block.

I think part of the problem may be that even if it would work well in an automotive application, it was still originally designed for industrial purposes, so perhaps marketing to car enthusiasts is not one of their priorities... They might be wanting to work more closely with businesses they would be supplying these to. I dunno, just some thoughts. But I do wish there was video of it running, I’d love to hear what it sounds like.

5 hp Briggs and Stratton because that car will already break the bank.

It’s a 6cyl Ponton, W128/180 (with a missing grille, what you see in the pic is a grille support). The car in your pic is a 4cyl Ponton W120/121. The 4 cyl cars have a similar profile but are smaller. To confuse things more, there was the W105 219 Ponton, which is a 4cyl front end on a 6cyl engine and body.

It became easier with fintails, where the bodies are the same, only the front ends are different. W111/112 is 6cyl, W110 is 4cyl - except for another one for confusion, the W110 230, which is a 6cyl car.  W110s have a shorter front end, and single headlights.

After fintails, things became more straightforward: W114 = 6cyl, W115 = 4cyl and 5cyl diesel. And after that, all engine variants shared a platform.

The hood of the 6 cyl inder models looks indeed very similar. But I didn’t find any pictures that would have that “inner grille” piece. All mounting holes near it seem to be empty so this m akes me think that “inner grille” isn’t detachable.

Maybe the early models have it but the design was simplifi ed soon?

The cars were made for several years, there could have been a change. I am not familiar with the structure under the chrome grille/shell, but I know it slides right over that piece in the topic car above. The inner piece does not look detachable, I agree.

I will wager the car in that pic is a W180 220 or 220S.
